BACKGROUND NOTE

 

Founded in 1934, UAL was the third largest airline by passenger traffic in the US, operating more than 4,500 flights a day to 339 airports across five continents. The airline was a founding member of Star Alliance, which provided service to more than 190 countries through its member airlines. UAL’s biggest shareholder was Berkshire Hathaway Inc. , led by Warren Buffett, who held more than a 9% stake in the airline. In 2010, UAL merged with Continental Airlines in a deal worth US$3.2 billion. As of 2016, UAL generated over US$36.5 billion in sales and a net income of over US$2.2 billion...
